TOYOTA RECORDS 25.3% MARKET SHARE FOR JUNE SALES

The Hilux has led monthly local vehicle sales with a total of 3 936 units sold in the month of June. The Hilux was 1 323 adrift of its closest competitor, while Toyota light commercial vehicles (LCV) sales registered 2 719 units more than the nearest rival. With a year-to-date total of 19 842, the Hilux is 4 763 units ahead of its nearest competitor. The Toyota group was also perched atop the local sales leader board with 11 826 of its models finding new homes – culminating into a respectable 25.3% market share.
According to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) domestic sales of new LCV, bakkies and mini buses, at 14 261 units, had declined by 58 units or 0.4% compared to the 14 319 light commercial vehicles sold during the corresponding month last year. This is, however, no cause concern as total new vehicle sales at 46 678 units had shown an improvement of 1 346 vehicles or 3% from the 45 332 vehicles sold in June last year.
Toyota has registered a total of 64 259 vehicle sales year-to-date compared to the 61 722 sales accumulated in the first six months of 2017. Other than Hilux, there was a strong showing by other nameplates including the Quantum with 1 376 units, Fortuner with 1 190, Yaris with 885 as well as RAV4 with 753. The evergreen trio of Corolla/Auris/Quest posted 1 226 units while Etios managed 977 – just 23 short of 1 000.
“While we cannot fight off the urge to highlight the best performing vehicles in our organisation, the truth is that all the vehicles in our stable are the total sum of our success. As an organisation we are also proud of the contributions made by the various divisions and departments, including the manufacturing plant, all the sales support structures as well as our dealer network of more than 200 branches in Southern Africa,” says Calvyn Hamman, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Toyota South Africa Motors.
Luxury SUVs also fared well for both Toyota and Lexus brands, with Land Cruiser 200 and Prado registering 86 and 63, respectively. Lexus LX (10), RX (13) and NX (13) were all in the double digits again last month.
Truck division Hino also performed remarkably well posting 186 units in the medium commercial vehicle (MCV) segment and 156 in the heavy commercial vehicle (HCV) category. All the MCV sales came from Hino 300 Series while sales in the HCV segment were generated by Hino 500 Series (142) and 700 Series (14).
“With price fuel reaching new heights this month, we are sadly not expecting things to be easier for the consumer. However, we are a resilient nation and we will square up to the economic challenges facing our country. Despite the bleak outlook, we will continue to create customer smiles at Toyota by offering the market competitive pricing on our products,” says Hamman.
