You shouldn’t be making big life decisions every time you at the petrol station, so why drive a big fuel guzzling car. Small hatchbacks are some of South Africa’s most popular cars and it’s easy to see why. They are easy to park, come with loads of cool features and won’t cost you an arm and a leg to drive or maintain.
We look at five of the most tempting new hot hatchbacks on sale for under R150,000 in South Africa today. All of the
new cars on this list come with driver and passenger airbags, ABS, front electric windows, air-con and at the minimum a radio/cd unit.

The Suzuki Alto is an adorable little compact car and it offers the kind of styling that you’ll either love or hate. Throw in great fuel consumption, excellent safety features and a price of less than R125K and this little new car just can’t be overlooked.
Price – R154 400
Toyota lands on this list with their new Yaris hatchback. With its new revised styling it comes across as more bold and masculine than the old Yaris, which some considered to be more of a girl’s car. The new car on this list has a 1.0 engine and therefore has the best claimed fuel efficiency compared to its rivals, however the small engine also means it has a very slow 0 – 100km acceleration time. At R154,400 the Yaris is a serious contender.
Price – R151 900
Fords entry level Figo definitely deserves a place on this list. Styling wise the Figo is based on the old Fiesta, although some minor style tweaks means it looks good both on the outside and the inside. Some people tend to think its looks are a bit cutesy and more suited to young woman but that shouldn’t stop you from buying this ford hatchback. It comes standard with Bluetooth connectivity and has been noted to be a real fun new car to drive. At R147, 900 you simply can’t get better value for money.
